Pediatric Dentistry (Dentistry for kids)

As children’s teeth begin to grow and change, they are at greater risk of developing cavities.  In order to prevent irreversible damage, proactive treatment is essential.  Through treatment, we safely and effectively help your children maintain optimal oral health.  Part of our treatment is providing education that helps them maintain healthy oral habits such as brushing and flossing.

How Often Does My Child Need to See a Dentist?

Just like mom and dad should visit the dentist every 6 months, your child should see a dentist on a similar schedule.  There is a lot going on in a child’s mouth as baby teeth grow in, fall out and are replaced by adult teeth.  Visiting the dentist regularly will help to make sure serious problems don’t develop, and correct any issues before they escalate.  By starting healthy habits from a young age, your child will grow knowing the importance of dental care.

Good oral health starts from a very young age.  Fluoride is the primary ingredient in tooth paste that helps to prevent cavities.  You can’t clean teeth properly without using it, and you shouldn’t use an amount that is too heavy for a child.  In the beginning, young children will not know how to handle tooth brushes properly and proper techniques will have to be taught to the child and parent.  A dentist appointment can help both the child and the parents maintain effective tooth brushing.

What Should I Do if my Child Knocks Out a Permanent Tooth?

Knocking out a permanent tooth requires immediate care to help ensure the tooth is able to reattach.  Any bleeding can be controlled by having the child bite down on a piece of gauze.  If you’re able to reinsert the tooth into the socket without causing much distress to your child, that is the best way to preserve the tooth until it can be seen by a dentist.  Make sure it is cleaned off first with a rinse of milk, if you are unable to reinsert it, you can keep it from drying out by placing it in milk.  Then come see your dentist.
